Daviess County (Indiana) sees rise in the Syphilis cases

For almost 2 years after dealing with the outbreak of Covid-19, health departments in Daviess county, Indiana are now facing a new outbreak of Syphilis in late 2021.

As per the latest data from the CDC’s STD report, syphilis, previously limited to Evansville, quickly spread to 11 surrounding counties is now a major problem in Daviess county.

The center for disease control contacted the healthcare departments in Daviess county after the reports suggested a rise in cases of Syphilis in the community. In the recent weeks, around 20 cases of syphilis have been identified as compared to 2 or 3 cases used to be detected for an entire year.

This is particularly alarming as the state-wise data from CDC shows, Indiana, in 37th position in the ranking for Syphilis infection rate per 100000 people (refer to the table below) and the Syphilis spread (rate) in Daviess county is quite high.

Healthcare Departments in the county have already started testing people with symptoms of Syphilis. That’s not it, health officials are contacting tracing to find those who may have syphilis through the partners. They are also making sure that those with the disease can get it treated.

Syphilis is a dangerous STD, as it progresses in stages and even has the ability to affect the unborn children. It can be catastrophic as it can cause pregnancy related complications if a pregnant women contracts syphilis.

Daviess county healthcare officials have warned people not to remain carefree about syphilis and immediately get tested for it once you notice its symptoms.
