It is caused by a bacteria known as Chlamydia trachomatis. Its symptoms are not easily visible as it often caused no observable symptoms. Thus around 30%-55% cases go unnoticed which is making it more prevalent. Although the treatment is more or less the same in both men & women, its symptoms and diagnosis methods vary according to one’s gender.

 

Chlamydia symptoms in Men

  • White, milky, watery discharge from penis
  • Pain or burning sensation while urinating
  • Tenderness, inflammation around testicle area

Most of the above symptoms mentioned are likely to appear in 2 to 4 weeks of initial exposure.Symptoms in men are not limited to genitals. Chlamydia can also affect throat infection, Conjunctivitis eyes and rectum pain depending on the area from which it got transmitted.

 

What can happen if the Chlamydia goes untreated? In men, it can lead to loss of fertility, damage sperm and cause scarring in the reproductive tract (which can lead to permanent infertility).

Chlamydia has multiple times, the ability to fragment the DNA in sperms, which means it is susceptible to breakage (of DNA) whereas they required being tightly withheld.

 

Chlamydia diagnosis in men? 

Earlier testing is a key as Chlamydia affects fertility in men, thus if you had sex with your new partner, you are not sure of (his/her sexual history) STD contraction, then you should get tested for STD in the testing center or at your local STD testing centers or Government clinic. Chlamydia treatment in men ?

If tested positive a single dose of an anti-biotic Azithromycin tablet or equivalent shall be prescribed. It is essential to order a treatment for yourself by whatever means once you come to know about you being infected. Also, make all your partners aware about your infection so that they too can diagnose in time.

 

How to Prevent yourself from Chlamydia?

To reduce the risk of contraction and passing it to the other person always make sure you follow the things such as

  • Use condoms during intercourse
  • Use condoms on sexual toys

Chlamydia symptoms in Women

As in men, Chlamydia symptoms in women are not often noticeable. Surprisingly, only 35% of the women become aware of the contraction of Chlamydia and in most cases in 2 weeks of infection.

 

Symptoms in Women

  • Vaginal Discharge caused by cervicitis.
  • Pain or burning while urinating
  • Frequent urination

Chlamydia causes infection in the urethra and can lead to infection in Urinary track, thus causing pain and burning sensation while urinating.

 

What can happen if the Chlamydia goes untreated in women?

It can cause severe repercussions like

  • Loss of Fertility
  • Cervicitis: The cervix (the neck of the womb) can become inflamed, which causes discomfort, bleeding and irregular discharge
  • Bartholinitis : It can result in very rough & painful experience during sex as blockage and infection of the Bartholin’s glands.
  •  It causes Pelvic Inflammatory Disease which causes
    • Lower back pain, Abdominal pain
    • Bleeding during sex
    • Bleeding or Spotting between periods
    • Fever, Nausea
    • Heaviness around lips area
