What are the Changes in getting Chlamydia from oral sex?

The chances of contracting Chlamydia from oral sex is not so high but the risk of getting an STD from oral sex depends on the following things

  • The type of sexual activity performed
  • Depends on ‘how common Chlamydia is in the population to which the sex partners belong?’

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the chances of contracting chlamydia in the throat increase if:

  • You’re having oral sex with a male who has an infected penis.
  • You’re having oral sex with a woman who has an infected vagina or urinary tract.
  • You’re having oral sex with a male or female who has an infected rectum.

The inverse is also true. The likelihood of contracting genital chlamydia increases if:

  • You are having oral sex on your penis with a partner who has chlamydia in the throat.
  • If you have oral sex on the vagina from a partner who has chlamydia in the throat, you may develop chlamydia of the vagina or urinary tract.
  • If you have oral sex on the anus with a partner who has chlamydia in the throat, you may also have chlamydia in the rectum.
  • The infection can spread from your fingers to other parts of your body, including your eyes, nose, and mouth.

Aside from sexual activities that easily spread chlamydia, there are a few other factors that will further increase your chances of getting this mouth infection.

Cause of Chlamydia appearing in the throat

Chlamydia passes from the infected person to the healthy person by means of sexual activity. Depending on your choice of sexual act, one may experience symptoms in different areas of the body. One may experience discomfort or unusual discharge from the bottom where they’ve engaged in anal intercourse, if they’ve engaged in oral intercourse one may also experience symptoms of sore throat and likewise

Chlamydia in the throat is usually caused if the patient has oral sex with a partner who has a genital chlamydia infection. Furthermore, getting oral sex from someone who has a chlamydia infection of the throat has the potential to transmit the bacteria to the genitals of the receiver.

Description (Symptoms) of Chlamydia in the throat, What does it look like?

A sore throat after oral sex with redness around and on the neck, loss of voice, etc are the initial signs of Chlamydia. Detailed symptoms of Chlamydia are as follows

  • White spots in your throat or tonsils
  • Small spots with white patches or dots on your tonsil or throat tissue.
  • Swollen tonsils and a sore throat.

These spots, if left untreated, can lead to more serious complications such as scarring of your throat tissue and difficulty breathing. That is why, even if you have swollen tonsils few days after oral sex, you should get tested for chlamydia

Other Symptoms of Chlamydia in the Throat

Apart from white spots, there are a number of other signs that you have while you have chlamydia in your throat or mouth. These symptoms are as follows

  • Pain while swallowing
  • Painless sores in the mouth
  • Hoarseness in voice
  • Bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth
  • increased saliva production
  • Low-grade fever
  • Swollen Lymph nodes in the neck

If you have any of these symptoms, as well as swollen tonsils and white patches on your throat tissue, you should get tested for STDs as soon as possible. This can lead to fast treatment before Chlamydia reaches the advanced stage.

Oral Chlamydia treatment Chlamydia in throat treatment

Chlamydia can be treated with antibiotics once it has been diagnosed and confirmed. To avoid passing the STD to your partner and, as a result, contracting chlamydia again later, you should avoid sex for the 7 days you are on antibiotics.

Chlamydia is easily treated if caught early enough. The longer you wait before seeking treatment, the more likely it will progress from mild to severe. When it becomes severe, it can cause serious reactions in the body and make healing difficult, and the damage is often irreversible.

STDs are not one of those illnesses that will resolve themselves if left untreated for an extended period of time. If you continue to have sex without treatment, you will not only spread Chlamydia, but you will also spread HIV. Not only will you spread chlamydia if you continue to have sex without treatment, but you can end up with some serious complications on your hands.

Can you get chlamydia from kissing?

The simple, straightforward answer to this question is “No”. You can only contract Chlamydia through sexual activity such as oral, intercourse, and anal sex.

How to avoid getting oral chlamydia?

Be aware of the status of your new partner. We understand that this can be uncomfortable.

Aside from talking to your partner about their status, you can also use protection, such as condoms. Not using protection is part of the reason why so many people end up with STDs like chlamydia.

When engaging in oral sex on the penis, use a condom or another barrier method each time you have oral sex.

When performing oral sex on the vagina or anus, use a dental dam or cut open a condom to make a square, then put it between the mouth and the partner’s vagina or anus.

Oral chlamydia Treatment

Oral Chlamydia is treated using antibiotics such as azithromycin or doxycycline. Other antibiotics such as Erythromycin (Erygel), Levofloxacin (Levaquin), and Ofloxacin (Floxin) can be prescribed for chlamydia (other than just oral chlamydia)

During the treatment, it is expected from the patients to remain absolutely abstain from having sex (in both oral and intercourse form)

The recurrence rate of Chlamydia is very high and so it is expected to finish or complete the entire course of antibiotics, even after the symptoms are gone.

Antibiotics curbs the growth of bacterial growth, which cures the infection.

Test for oral chlamydia

Testing for oral chlamydia can be done by taking a swab from the throat. The incubation period of chlamydia is between 5 to 14 days, which means the Chlamydia symptoms might be seen on the body within 5 to 14 days of infection. So it is recommended to get tested for STDs as soon as possible.

Testing has to be done in an FDA-approved, CLIA-Certified lab, we have an STD testing facility (with our 45000 testing centers) catering to possible patients across the USA, and tests results are quick and 100 % discrete.
